Home computing was still in its infancy when the Atari 800 XL PC was first offered to the public.
Despite the limits of computing in the early 80s, both the Atari 800 XL PC and its main rival, the
Commodore 64, had extensive third party support. In fact, many of the software companies that
were the big companies in 1984 are still considered major players in 2000. Electronic Arts was
probably the most prolific game designer back in the early 1980s, and they wrote litterally hundreds
of different titles for both Atari and Commodore. Infocom (now known as Activision), Microprose,
Epyx, and Interplay were also some of the big software companies that wrote for the Atari and Commodore and are still
around today. (Actually, many of Epyx's games were rewritten and released for the Nintendo. Shadowgate,
DeJaVu, and Uninvited were all originally produced by Epyx.)
I have over 140 different games for my Atari 800 XL PC, and many of them still work to this
day. They may not be as indepth or have near as good as graphics as today's games do, but they
are classics in their own right. Unfortunatly, many of the games that were made back then have not
been re-worked and / or re-released for today's computers. (An expcetion to this is Infocom; many of their
games have been released exactly "as is" for the modern day computer.)
In honor of the exceptional games that were released back in the early 1980s, I have complied a list of some of
the best games that were developed. Many of these games, while crude by today's standards, set the bar for the games
that people play today. From games that incorporated revolutionary (and quite intelligent) computer AIs, to games that
had a unique twist to them, to games that encouraged people to play together, to games that were just plain fun to play
- all the games included in this list were pioneers for the games that we currently play today.
With that said, here is a list of the Top 10 Games for the Atari 800 XL PC.
